Chartwell School
About this Nominee
Chartwell School is an independent school dedicated to empowering students with dyslexia and associated learning differences to discover their strengths, develop confidence, and achieve their full potential. Located on California’s Central Coast, Chartwell serves students in grades 1–12 through an individualized, research-based approach that combines academic rigor with social-emotional growth and self-advocacy.
Students engage in an individualized educational experience that includes academics, arts, athletics, outdoor education, and STEM opportunities designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and resilience. For more than four decades, Chartwell has transformed the educational journeys of students who may not have thrived in traditional settings, helping them develop the skills, self-understanding, and determination to succeed in college, careers, and life. Chartwell graduates leave prepared to make meaningful contributions to their communities while embracing the unique ways they learn and think.
Extending its mission beyond campus, Chartwell established the Chartwell Teaching Institute, a professional learning and outreach initiative dedicated to sharing best practices in literacy instruction, dyslexia education, and neurodiversity-informed teaching. Through educator training, school partnerships, family education, and community engagement, the Institute helps expand access to effective teaching practices and greater understanding of diverse learners. Together, Chartwell School and the Chartwell Teaching Institute are helping create a future where all students are recognized for their strengths and equipped to thrive.
